Thomas Sayre: Process

Thomas Sayre was generous enough to participate in All A-Board, but he also shared a couple of “making of” photos too.

This piece, BURN, was made collaboratively with Sayre's wife, Joan Ellen Deck, and created by first burning the burled look into the surface by lightly torching the soaked wood chips.

The letters were formed by placing tiny gravel bits on the surface as a resist and applying sooty acetylene torch smoke to create a rich black around and between the shapes. The gravel bits then need to be removed by launching them straight up into the air from the surface (it takes two) and quickly pulling the piece out from under to avoid smudging the soot. It is finished with a floor sealant to lock the smoky residue in place.

This piece is part of the All A-Board Live Auction Collection. Which means you need to be at the event this Sunday, April 16, if you want to bid on them.
