Didn't make it to Hopscotch? We’ve got you covered with a recap.
In case you missed it, the 13th annual Hopscotch Music Festival took over downtown Raleigh last weekend, September 7-9, 2023. The three-day event featured a stacked musical lineup, tasty food trucks, and day parties for attendees to enjoy.
This year, Skate Raleigh blocked off Martin Street and hosted a pop-up park with daily contests for skateboarders, bikers, scooters, and roller skaters to enjoy between the exciting shows outside Kings. The pop-up park included ramps, rails, and obstacles arranged in the street—all accompanied by skater swag and drink tents. Capital Club 16’s food truck, Wandering Wolf, supplied the pop-up with great eats while a live DJ boosted the energy with jams. Raleigh's artist-owned and operated streetwear brand Munjo Munjo offered the crowd stylish, custom Skate Raleigh merch.
The pop-up park provided a safe and inclusive space for skaters and observers to have fun and share a sense of community. Throughout the weekend, skaters of all ages could stop by the pop-up to showcase their skills in the heart of downtown Raleigh.
Festival attendees enjoyed a free show of tricks and high-flying acrobatics while waiting for their favorite local bands to perform. Socializing, skating, and music was the theme on Martin Street during this exciting weekend, thanks to Skate Raleigh.
Each day of the event featured contests with opportunities to blow away the festival crowds and earn prizes, including a bike jam on Thursday and a roller skate competition on Friday. On Thursday, sidewalks were packed with spectators who watched in awe as bikers flew into the air—spinning and flipping from one ramp to another. After a short rain delay on Friday, roller skaters received “oohs and aahs” from the streets of Raleigh as they competed to land the coolest grinds and jumps. Skater or not, everyone could appreciate the show on Martin Street.
Fortunately, you can catch a rainchecked skateboard contest this weekend, September 15, from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Conlon Family Skatepark. Local artists will paint barriers at the park during this event! There will be music and a food truck for all to enjoy.
Skate Raleigh’s mission to create a stronger and more active community means there are many more opportunities to get involved in the future. You can stay up-to-date on events and support the cause by following Skate Raleigh on Instagram (@sk8raleigh) or subscribing to the newsletter.
